A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in national works. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
