Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
