The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
